The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett – 5/5⭐️

Okay if you haven’t picked this one up yet, please do it!! ASAP! It’s so good. This is a book that is going to stay with me. The characters, the topics, the writing.. definitely add this to your TBR!

So here’s the goodreads synopsis: “ The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it’s not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it’s everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Ten years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters’ storylines intersect?”

So firstly, the writing. Bennett does an incredible job weaving together this family and their stories. I was entirely sucked into this book and although it’s a family story and some would think it would be slower, it isn’t! I honestly didn’t want to put it down. I was very invested in the twins lives, and then their children’s lives.

Secondly, the topics of this novel are SO important and relevant that I also just think everyone should read this for that reason alone. The novel takes place between the 1950s to 1990s and it’s a story about family and race. Racism is prominent and how racial identity has shaped these characters lives. As well as the choices they make and how that affects them their whole lives and into the next generation.

The novel has several POV’s but it’s not confusing so don’t let that stop you from reading it. I loved each of the characters in their own way, and adored a couple of the side characters as well. Very well developed. This novel has layers and I can’t recommend it enough!

This novel was also just picked up by HBO for a series. So I will for sure be tuning in to see how it’s brought to life.
